A coast-to coast glance at some of the industry’s newest additions
Austin, Texas | FREDDO ATX | freddoatx.com
Along with “Greece’s most popular coffee,” the freddo cappucino, this hip new Austin spot offers made-from-scratch dishes like spanakopita and tiropita, along with sweets like house-made bougatsa. The coffee shop also offers Greek food, beer, and wine served inside and on the patio of a house built in 1876, according to a local web site. “Freddo Time is anytime people want to enjoy life and escape into what we all have grown to love…. Coffee and ambiance,” its web site enthuses.
New York City | EROS | erosgreekeastvillage.com
In Manhattan’s East Village, a second location of upscale-casual Eros now occupies the space that housed local fixture Kitchen Sink Diner. Its “simple, elegant Greek” menu translates as straightforward fish, steak, and chicken preparations, along with veggie options like meat-free moussaka. Greek labels star on wine lists, and at the uptown location, a raw bar serves up clams, oysters, and sushi-grade tuna.
Brooklyn, New York | CHICKEN FEASTIN | chicken-feastin.com
The second location of this local fast-casual brand opened in busy Park Slope in December. A menu of “homemade dishes inspired by traditional Greek and American cuisine” includes spanakopita, loukaniko, souvlaki, gyros, and—of course—chicken, which is charcoal-grilled. Reviewing the original location, a Brooklyn blog hailed Chicken Feastin’ as “an answer to the block’s complete lack of any decent fast food… The standout is the Loukaniko Haloumi, a combo of homemade greek sausage and a squeaky, firm cheese.”
