AMBASSADOR GEORGE TSOUNIS RECEIVES 30th ANNUAL PHEIDIPPIDES AWARD

NEW YORK —With heartfelt remarks about his roots in Platanos, Nafpaktia, the importance of the Greek language in his upbringing, and the formative influence of his mother, former U.S. Ambassador to Greece George Tsounis accepted the 30th Phidippides Award from Hellenic Public Radio COSMOS FM at a celebratory gala held Wednesday, April 9 at the historic Union League Club in Manhattan.The prestigious award, honors individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions to Hellenism.

The gala dinner was attended by prominent figures including His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, Consul General of Greece in New York Iphigenia Kanara, and a wide cross-section of the Greek-American community. In his remarks, GAEPIS Board Chairman Stelios Taketzis highlighted Ambassador Tsounis distinguished career in business, philanthropy, and public service, noting that his achievements embody the spirit and values of the Hellenic world.Taketzis also acknowledged the Ambassador’s generous support of scholarships and used the occasion to announce GAEPIS’s planned expansion into new multimedia platforms such as podcasting and YouTube broadcasting.

Dr. Albert Bourla, Chairman and CEO of Pfizer, delivered a moving introduction of the honoree, reflecting on their personal friendship and Tsounis’s unwavering dedication to Hellenic ideals and the Greek-American relationship. In his acceptance speech, Ambassador Tsounis expressed his gratitude for the honor and praised the work of COSMOS FM in preserving and promoting Hellenism.

Past recipients of the Pheidippides Award include luminaries such as Andrew Athens, Theodoros Spyropoulos, Nikolaos Mouyaris, Mikis Theodorakis, Yannis Markopoulos, Archbishop Elpidophoros, Hellenic Medical Society of New York, AHEPA, Paulette Poulos (Leadership 100), and leading Cypriot-American organizations PSEKA and the Federation of Cypriot-American Organizations.
