The charming, classic train-car diner lined with wood paneling at 33 Leonard Street, NYC (212-925-7188), has been around since the Forties. It is run by the husband-and-wife team of Ted and Ann Karounos, who inherited it from their family, who’s had it for the past forty years (so we learned from the blog Eater, which recently reviewed it along with a bunch of other diners). Square is actually shaped like a triangle and features a sidewalk café area in the summer months. The cash-only eatery serves Greek and American fare and is open from 6 am to 9 pm. on weekdays, and 7:30 am to 4 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

From comments in reviews written about this diner: “Given how sparse diners are in the Financial District / TriBeCa – this is a gem of down-to-earth, warm, welcoming diner.”
