EFFIE AND LOULA BOUIKIDIS had the right idea when they converted this small house in Washington Square West (1127 Pine St, Philadelphia, PA; 215-592-8333) into a restaurant. They baptized it by the name of one of them and ended up with a multiple-room structure—some large rooms, some small, each with its own charm and individuality. Effie’s is a brick-lined, romantic establishment that serves the cuisine of Greece as cooked at home in casual quarters, plus a beautiful patio where it offers outdoor dining in the summer months. The BYOB spot is known for its generous portions served in a laid-back atmosphere. And though it is not inexpensive, it’s worth a try for its atmosphere alone. What’s more, it offers great desserts that you’ll go crazy over. Good food, drink, and conversation are the essence of Greek hospitality, and Effie’s offers the gathering spot to experience them. Dinner is served after 5 pm.
