Be Aware

Τhere’s lots of good stuff in this issue, which heralds the 50th-year anniversary of the establishment of Olympia Foods, one of the country’s largest producers of gyro and Greek/Mediterranean specialty foods. In “Forward-Focused at 50,” editor and contributor Constantine Kolitsas visits the Papantoniou family, which has helmed the organization over these five decades. And in our Greek-language pages, Athens correspondent Gina Kallitsi introduces readers to the Yiam spice company, before bringing them to Estiatori Herve in the Ano Petralona neighborhood of the Greek capital.

In addition to great content in Estiator, October is a month that is dedicated to breast cancer awareness, and in these few paragraphs we’re going to use our pulpit to do some preaching!

The stats go as such: Approximately 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer over the course of their lives. It’s expected that by the end of 2022, over 287,850 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and that it will claim the lives of approximately 43,250 women.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer globally, accounting for more than 12 percent of all new cancer cases. Thirty percent of the newly diagnosed cancers in women this year will be breast cancers. It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in the United States. Only lung cancer takes more lives than breast cancer. As of January 2022, there are more than 3.8 million women with a history of breast cancer in the U.S., including women currently in treatment as well as women that have completed treatment.

The positive news is that breast cancer death rates have declined nearly 40 percent between 1989 and 2016. This progress is largely attributed to improvements in early detection methods that include self-examination, regular mammograms, and recognizing signs. All of us at Estiator urge everyone to familiarize yourselves with the signs, and keep current with your screenings.

And have a happy, healthy October!
