Gold Coast AHEPA Chapter 456 Holds First Coat Drive

Ahepa Gold Coast Chapter 456 holds its first coat drive to give the gift of warmth this holiday season. The Chapter, with the generosity of the Archangel Michael community, collected over 60 children and adults coats for donation.
The coat drive program was spearheaded by Thanasi Glavas, an active member with the chapter that has become engaged in leading and supporting various activities. Thanasi, along with President of Chapter 456 Gus Constantine and Brother Norman Glavas, dropped off the coats to Frank Ales, a member of the Faith Mission Board of Directors. Mr. Ales was extremely grateful for the donation and thanked the Brothers for their efforts.
The coats were donated to Faith Mission Inc. of Mineola, a charitable 501(C)(3) all-volunteer organization that operates out of Lutheran Church of our Savior. Founded by Mary Joesten and her late husband in the late 1960s, Faith Mission currently helps thousands of individuals and families in Nassau and the surrounding Long Island areas of Queens, Brooklyn, and Suffolk County.
The coats will be distributed to those lacking appropriate warm clothes to survive in the harsh north east climate. Recipients, many of which are immigrants, tend to lack coats and are dependent on these vital resources. In line with its mission, the chapter strives to assist with children attending school and getting an education. Something that may be taken for granted, something as simple as having a warm coat, can prevent a student from excelling to their personal best. It is because of this, the chapter felt compelled to do what it can for these families.
With the initial success of the drive, the chapter says it will continue this tradition and grow its efforts to make a direct impact on the local community.
