New York City, NY – [October 16, 2024] – The Greek Elder Care Network™ will host a special
Book Club presentation and live oral history interview with International Bestselling Author and Emmy
Award-winning Producer Yvette Manessis Corporon. This event, in partnership with the
Hellenic-American Project (HAP), will take place on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at the THESPIS Theater in Astoria, NY.
The event will feature a presentation of the author’s latest novel, Daughter of Ruins (Harper Muse, 2024). There will be a book signing followed by a live interview conducted by Dr. Nicholas Alexiou, Founder and Director of HAP and Professor of Sociology at Queens College. The interview is part of his ongoing work documenting the Greek American experience preserving Greek American history.
Yvette Manessis Corporon, a first-generation Greek American, draws deeply from her family’s roots in her writing. Her connection to Greece adds a rich authenticity to her work. Daughter of Ruins takes readers on a journey through time, weaving together the lives of three women in Corfu, Kefalonia, and the US. The story examines the experiences of women in Greece in the 1920s and 1950s and provides a glimpse at the early Greek-American experience for women. As in her other works, Manessis Corporon draws inspiration from Greek history, culture, traditions, and myth. The novel explores themes of love, sacrifice, family, turmoil, and resilience. It is a deeply moving story that follows three women struggling to control their destinies, fighting to become the women they were meant to be.
Readers of Daughter of Ruins have praised Manessis Corporon’s writing and compelling storytelling. One reader on GoodReads wrote, “This was a heartfelt, emotional, and captivating journey through the lives of three courageous women who faced numerous challenges. I was unable to put this novel down and read it in one sitting. I highly recommend this remarkable novel to everyone. (Definitely adding this to my favorite pile).” Another reader shared, “I cried my way through the pages of heartaches, triumphs, setbacks, devastation, and the trials that women can endure during their lifetime. It made me think of books like Pachinko and A Thousand Splendid Suns.”
“When Yvette’s new book was introduced as a potential pick for our Book Club, it piqued my interest,” said Angie Tsekenis Xidias, Founder of the Greek Elder Care Network. “Yvette is a fellow NYU alum who studied Classical Civilization and Journalism, and I studied Classical Civilization and Hellenic Studies, which makes this pick particularly meaningful. The theme of women’s empowerment, central to her story, resonates with me as it aligns with the core of my professional work. We couldn’t be more excited

to bring her story to our community and preserve it in GreekAmerican history through the Hellenic-American Project Oral Interview, which will be recorded in front of a live audience.”
Dr. Alexiou, who is also the President of the Greek American Writers Guild, emphasized the importance of Manessis Corporon’s work: “Yvette’s storytelling reflects the richness of our culture, and as a first-generation Greek American, it is vital to preserving her own personal story, through this live interview which of course includes her latest work as an author with Daughter of Ruins.”
The event will take place Saturday, November 16, 2024 at the THESPIS Theater, 25-02 Newtown Ave., Astoria, NY. The book signing will begin at 5:00 pm and the interview will begin promptly at 5:30 pm.
