THE BREAKFAST COMPANY

This bright, friendly restaurant, opened in October by mother-son team Terri and Dimitri Syros, is family-oriented in more ways than one. “This restaurant was opened as a tribute to my grandfather, George Soublis, who founded El Greco Cafe in downtown Sarasota in 1990,” Dimitri Syros, 27, told the Bradenton Herald. Fresh breakfast fare gets a few Greek tweaks, like gyro meat in an eggy skillet. “We have been blessed to have such an outpouring of love and support from friends and family,” Syros tells Estiator. “Even though our beloved Pappou George passed away last year, we are proud to carry on his legacy.”

GOOD JAKE’S

There’s an Iliad-worthy saga behind this Greek-Italian eatery in Coopersburg, PA, open since November. Angelo Loucareas, a Rhodes native, ran restaurants and olive-oil stores in Europe and the US. Spouse Brenda Gutshall Kotroutsos is a direct descendant of the restaurateur who opened a tavern in 1745 on the same spot where Good Jake’s stands now. On the menu: comfort food like gyros, Greek salads, pizzas, and baklava. About that name: In World War I, “Good Jakes” meant firefighters; Good Jake’s the restaurant dedicates part of its space to a local nonprofit that serves firefighters. “The Dalmatian on our logo reflects our respect for firefighters as well,” Loucareas told SauconSource.com.

URBAN GREEK

Sharing the benefits of the Mediterranean diet motivated Sophia Diakoloukas to open this quick-service eatery in November. “Understanding that the Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest ways to eat, we wanted to make those foods and flavors easily accessible,” she told the Shelton Herald. All of the eatery’s chef-crafted dips, soups, proteins, and desserts are made from scratch daily—“the same way it’s been done in Greece for centuries,” Diakoloukas told the newspaper. Though she spent years as a digital marketer, Diakoloukas didn’t stray far from her roots when she pivoted careers; her father was also a restaurateur.
