Jersey City, New Jersey
TRÓS GREEK STREET FOOD

Since trós means “eat,” it’s fitting that New Jersey’s Plaka Souvlaki has been renamed Trós Greek Street Food by owner Black Diamond Hospitality Group. The brand’s third location, in Jersey City, follows stores in Newark and Harrison; more are planned. The new name reflects the fast-casual brand’s “dedication to its Greek roots while making the restaurant more recognizable and accessible as it prepares for future expansion,” its owners said in a press release. Trós’ menu is “curated by chefs from Greece,” the company says.

A former operations manager and a retired police officer have opened the first location of The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill franchise in Pennsylvania. As in the brand’s other locations, the menu features a signature The Great Greek Gyro, as well as lamb, steak, and chicken souvlaki plates and Greek salads. Four signature house-made dips, including hummus, tzatziki, melitzanosalata, and tirokafteri round out the menu. The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill operates 54 locations in 17 states, with 270 more under development.

Yanni and Amanda Tsigonias had long dreamed of opening their own Greek restaurant. After a stint owning a roofing business, the couple realized their restaurant fantasy last month, opening Yanni’s in Boise’s western Nampa suburb, according to a local news site. The restaurant’s facade features a mural of Paros; its menu offers Greek ribs, chicken souvlaki, avgolemono, salads, pastas, and flatbreads. Amanda Tsigonias told the news site that Yanni’s plans to offer free weekly meals to Boise’s homeless.

Easton, Pennsylvania
GYRO CONCEPT

So many customers attended Gyro Concept’s grand opening that it seemed like they were giving food away. That’s because they were. Gyro Concept celebrated the December launch of its second location by handing out complimentary gyros and offering most of the menu at half off. Yiannis Solomonidis and wife Bre own the restaurant, the offshoot of a recently closed ghost kitchen whose Greek fare became hugely popular with locals.

Set inside a former movie theater, this 4,000-square-foot newcomer is named for the ancient Greek goddesses of day and night. Playing off the concept, the bi-level restaurant will offer different food and cocktail menus depending on the time of day. Eater reports the kitchen is led by chef Nicko Moulinos, who hails from Corfu, and has worked in the kitchens of New York’s Le Bernardin and Taverna. Diners can expect a menu using seasonal ingredients, with an open wood-fired grill adding some char to dishes like the New York strip with potato espuma.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
MONA

Prolific Philadelphia restaurateur Teddy Sourias is betting big on this four-floor, 12,000-square-foot eatery and bar with a “Mediterranean-fusion” menu. Mona’s fare is elevated but approachable, with spreads like tirokafteri feta dip and baba ghanoush; small plates including falafel, halloumi fries, and kibbeh; and a range of souvlaki and gyros. Décor, reports a local news site, includes a massive mermaid mural installation on the third-floor landing.
