TELLY’S TAVERNA (28-13 23rd Avenue, Astoria, NY, 11105; 718-728-9056) is a pretty good eatery as far as Greek restaurants go, set up not unlike a lot of its neighboring comrades. The kitchen (including the grill) is situated up front, accompanied by a more casual dining area, while the whole left side of the restaurant serves as the formal dining room, where all the action takes place, so to speak.
The open-air atmosphere is great during summer months and gives diners a good opportunity to observe the goings-on on 23rd Ave. It’s common to see a lot of large parties dining at Telly’s, celebrating a holiday or a special family occasion.
Zagat describes this eatery with the following: “Simple perfection” via the “freshest” grilled fish at this “old-time” Astoria Greek taverna, where the “not-fancy” setting is “large,” “relaxing,” and overseen by a “friendly, never-rushed” staff; factor in “fair prices,” and no wonder it’s a hands-down local “favorite.”
