The Whitman as a Modern Diner/Lounge

MANAGEMENT at THE WHITMAN (4990 Rte 42, Turnersville NJ; 8562284449) describes their establishment as a “modern diner,” and I am in full agreement as far as it being modern in more than one way. The structure on the corner of Johnson Avenue and Black Horse Pike deserves kudos for being what one would call fanciful, with its shiny stainless steel frame and a glowing interior of neon in blues and reds. Then again, owners Cathy, Gina and Nick Poulianos are making sure that the staff of The Whitman, mostly young and mostly female, are always pleasant to their guests without at the same time being excessively friendly.
But The Whitman is much more than a modern diner. It is also a bar that flaunts its wares—wines and liquors—right where other diners place the coffee urn or the pastry display racks. It’s a chic lounge, as well, on its other end, should you decide to come in from the opposite entrance. That’s what is called the Martini Lounge, and it stays open though midnight, as does the diner itself. The Whitman has been serving allday American comfort food since 1975, the days of George Poulianos, and I am not exaggerating when I say that travelers from all over the country stop here to eat and rate it excellent for food, service and cleanliness.
